Why is important to keep my solar panels clean?

Once installed, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels require minimal maintenance and can operate for 25-30 years. However, it’s crucial to keep them clean to ensure optimal power generation. Even a small amount of grime, bird droppings, or heavy dust can have a negative impact on their performance.

Accumulated dust and dirt on solar panels can cause energy losses of up to 7-30% annually. In fact, a recent study revealed that the efficiency of solar modules and panels can drop by as much as 60% due to dust accumulation.

Neglecting to maintain your panels can result in energy loss, which ultimately means losing money. So, don’t forget the importance of regular maintenance for your solar panels.

How often should I clean my solar panels?

It is advisable to clean solar panels once or twice a year, depending on weather conditions. It is particularly crucial to clean the panels before winter arrives as there is less sunlight during this season, and it is essential to utilize the panels to their maximum potential.

Does cleaning solar panels make a difference?

Certainly. It’s important to note the energy loss percentages you could experience if your panels don’t receive the necessary maintenance each quarter. Here’s a breakdown of the percentages for each quarter over the next two years:

Year 1 Q1: 5% energy loss
Year 1 Q2: 10% energy loss
Year 1 Q3: 15% energy loss
Year 1 Q4: 20% energy loss
Year 2 Q1: 25% energy loss
Year 2 Q2: 30% energy loss
Year 2 Q3: 35% energy loss
Year 2 Q4: 35% energy loss

Why Rainwater Will Not Clean Your Solar Panels

To understand why rainwater cannot effectively clean solar panels, we can compare it to the dirt accumulation on a car windscreen. If you were to go without cleaning your windscreen for six months, the visibility would decrease significantly. The dirt and grime would build up and eventually become greenish. Even if it rained, the airborne dust particles in the rainwater would settle and stick to the surface once the water evaporates. When we use our wipers, we only clean the center of the screen, leaving a film of dirt on the edges. Similarly, solar panels are exposed to the same elements as the edges of our windscreen. The loss of light reduces visibility, which is crucial for maximizing the efficiency of solar panels and increasing financial returns.

What’s the professional cleaning system used?

For cleaning solar panels, a WFP (water-fed pole) setup with de-ionized water is highly recommended. It effectively eliminates bird droppings and spider excrement using a specialized brush, without causing any damage to the delicate surface.

What is “pure” water? The term is often used to describe both de-ionised water and distilled water, which are produced through distinct processes. Distilled water is usually manufactured on an industrial scale, while de-ionised water is commonly produced by individuals or by water-fed pole (WFP) window cleaners.

What’s the maximum height that can be reached?

We can reach solar panels installed on roofs over up to 2-storey buildings using our long extendable water-fed poles.

Any details to know before the job performance?

To ensure safety, it is recommended that the inverter controlling the solar panel system is turned off prior to beginning any maintenance tasks. Additionally, scheduling cleaning services in the morning is advised to prevent purified water from evaporating immediately upon contact with the panel surface due to either accumulated heat during the day or direct sunlight exposure.

Do you use any chemicals?

Manufacturers advise against the use of detergents that may lead to streaking, which can potentially reduce the effectiveness of the panels.

Any discounts for combined solar panel + window cleaning service?

We would be delighted to provide you with a 10% discount for opting for a combined service. Therefore, we suggest taking a moment to consider whether you would like your windows and gutters to be taken care of in one go. This is an excellent chance to reduce your expenses significantly. It’s a decision that you would not regret!
